Our Man in Canada Rob Thiessen interviews JP of Odin Mfg about his Great White Ripper of a Harley FXR Motorcycle.

This particular model FXR is a highly-modified police model FXRP. The Harley-Davidson FXRP (Police Edition) is highly regarded for its superior handling, a feature attributed to the innovative FXR chassis designed in the early 1980s. It was developed to offer better performance and maneuverability compared to earlier Harley models, making it a popular choice for law enforcement agencies.

Key Facts About the FXRP

Chassis and Handling: The FXRP is built on the FXR triangulated steel backbone frame, known for its stiffness, increased ground clearance, and improved lean angles. This design, partly engineered by Erik Buell, provided a significant handling advantage over other Harley models of its time.

Engine: The FXRP typically featured a Harley-Davidson V-twin engine, such as the 80ci Shovelhead initially, and later transitioning to the 1340cc Evolution (Evo) engine. These were performance-oriented engines for their era.

Police-Specific Features: As a law enforcement model, the FXRP came equipped with specialized parts, including: A frame-mounted fairing for aerodynamic efficiency and weather protection. Hard saddlebags for equipment storage. Footboards instead of standard foot pegs.Provisions for police-pursuit equipment like lights, sirens, and PA systems. Upgraded suspension for enhanced stability and control.

Purpose: The FXRP was Harley-Davidson's response to the faster, better-handling Japanese motorcycles popular with police departments in the 1970s and 80s. Its design aimed to provide law enforcement with a nimble, yet powerful American V-twin option.

Legacy: Many Harley enthusiasts and performance riders consider the FXR platform, including the FXRP, to be the best-handling motorcycle Harley-Davidson ever produced. Unmodified FXRP models with original police equipment are highly sought after by collectors today.
